Roofing in Bramford: river valley and industrial past

Bramford sits on the River Gipping just north-west of Ipswich, and the village’s shape still reflects what the river brought it. There was a paper mill here — Paper Mill Lane is named for it — and from the mid nineteenth century the parish carried one of the largest fertiliser and chemical works in the region, the operation that eventually became part of Fisons. The works are long gone, but they drew housing to the village and much of what they built is still standing.

The riverside core around St Mary’s Church, the Gipping Valley path and Bramford Lock holds the older property — clay pantile and plain tile, some slate, a scattering of listed buildings, and roof pitches steep enough that access matters as much as the covering itself. Being down in the valley also means those roofs sit in a damper microclimate than the housing on higher ground towards Sproughton and Burstall. Timber decks hold moisture longer, and mortar bedding on ridges softens sooner than it would a couple of miles away.

Behind that is the twentieth century village. Bramford grew steadily through the post-war decades and again with the more recent development off Loraine Way and Ship Lane, and that housing is concrete tile with felt-roofed garages, porches and single storey rear extensions. The main roofs on the 1960s and 1970s stock are now at the age where underfelt has gone brittle and ridge mortar is breaking up, which is the bulk of the repair work we do here. The flat roofs on that same housing are mostly on their original single-layer felt and well overdue replacement.

One practical note for Bramford specifically. The village is close enough to Ipswich that a good many homeowners here call an Ipswich roofer and get quoted a travel charge for the privilege. We do not apply one — Bramford is four miles from where we are based and it is not a journey worth charging for.
